View Full Version : Excellent skiing today - and I saw that big bird again

I'm glad I called sick at work today. The skiing was great.

Skyward, L. Wilderness and Mt Run were in super shape with few rocks and bare spots. U. Wilderness needs work but the expected white stuff tonight should help the groomers fix it for the weekend.

Has anyone seen that bird of prey with a 6 feet wing span that must be nesting somewhere in the forest under the gondola? I saw it again today, mostly brown and rusty feathers. An owl maybe? It glided by so fast (again) I could not make any details of it.

Best Regards

I saw this Monday and Tuesday. It seemed a bit mangy from Monday's perspective so my initial thought was a turkey vulture, and Tuesday I could only see the brown coloration and some falcon like features and due to it's size and elevation I would say it could be a Peregrine or owl but most likely turkey vulcher, but without lenses I couldn't tell. Any locals out there know for sure?

Here's a T.V.:

The American Turkey Vulture Society thinks that "...one of the most ubiquitous figures in North American skies, there is nevertheless very little understanding of the turkey vulture. This bird's graceful flight is often mistaken for that of a hawk, and its name conjures unmerited images of death, filth, and cruelty..." which is, they feel, an unfair characterization

I've been told of this raptor crusing the gondee line but have yet to see it myself. 6 feet is very big wing span for any of the native hawks.. A Peregrine falcon is much smaller and perfers cliff faces. Could be an immature bald eagle - they are all brown until adulthood and have wing spans of up to 80 inches..

Owls only come out at night..

I'll keep an eye open.

the TV has a bald head and its tail feathers are much lighter than its body - giving it a V shape.

We saw it yesterday A.M. from the summit quad. It was soaring over the slides area, then directly over us on the quad, hard to tell what it was, a TV or other. It did seem to have white feathers on the back side of its wings (they could have been tan). It certainly is a BIG BIRD!!

Turkey vultures rarely travel solo, so my vote'd be on that eagle. I'd love to see that.

Could be a Golden Eagle if the size is accurate.

Are golden eagles found in the Norhteast, and how do they compare in size to bald eagles?

Yes, mostly during migration time, which is around now. I've seen them in the Jay range during the fall migration. They are very close in size to the Baldies.

There is not much good info on GE migrations; but generally they move south from the Hudson Bay area in fall and winter in the Mid-Atlantic states, then move north in spring. There aren't that many around, so to see one is unusual.

Golden eagles are awesome! It definitely is a golden eagle I saw it the other day flying over the gondola as well. I have one that hangs out in my back yard. Last summer while kayaking on Lake Everesrt an osprey swooped down right in front of me to grab dinner in the river. Scared the heck out of me, but was so very cool. Blue herons are also super abundant and they are all over the place on the ausable. The adks rock!!!!

Turkey vultures rarely travel solo, so my vote'd be on that eagle. I'd love to see that.

4 yrs schooling in the ADKs (Smitty's and P'burgh) and I have seen equal sightings solo and grouped depending on how isolated you get in the terrain.

C'mon Someone get a good photo while the mountains empty and winds are up!!!

It's funny 'cause on my way up to the mountain last Friday afternoon I saw my first solo sighting just before getting off at exit 30. He/she was chowin' on a little deerie road kill about thirty feet from the side of the highway.

I can't comment on the bird at the gondola 'cause I still haven't seen it, but I don't think ravens ever get large enough to have a six foot wing span. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
