Is what I just saw forecasted on the Albany news for Placid Friday. Anyone from that neck of the woods seen any forecast confirming?

Thanks, 5-8'll work for starters.

BTW, JC are you a Cornell weather brainiack? You always seem to be there first with all things meteorologist ( sp? ).

lol, I was a meteorology major here at Cornell but I switched to business/econ last year. However, I do have a minor in meteorology and I have studied it for years and years. So while I don't claim to be a meteorologist, I do know a ton about it ;)

...WINTER STORM WATCH IN EFFECT FROM THURSDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH FRIDAY AFTERNOON...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN BURLINGTON HAS ISSUED A WINTER STORM WATCH FOR THE NORTHERN ADIRONDACKS OF NEW YORK...WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 1 PM THURSDAY AFTERNOON THROUGH 1 PM FRIDAY AFTERNOON.

RAIN DEVELOPING OVERNIGHT WILL MIX WITH AND THEN CHANGE TO SNOW DURING THE AFTERNOON HOURS ON THURSDAY ACROSS THE NORTHERN ADIRONDACKS. SNOW WILL CONTINUE INTO THURSDAY NIGHT...AND THEN TAPER OFF TO OCCASIONAL SNOW SHOWERS FRIDAY MORNING.

TOTAL SNOW ACCUMULATIONS WILL DEPEND PRIMARILY ON HOW QUICKLY COLD AIR CAN MOVE INTO THE ADIRONDACK REGION WHILE THE SURFACE LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM DEVELOPS RAPIDLY OVER EASTERN NEW ENGLAND LATE THURSDAY INTO THURSDAY NIGHT. THERE REMAINS SOME UNCERTAINTY...BUT THE POTENTIAL EXISTS FOR 5 TO 9 INCHES OF SNOW OVER THE WINTER STORM WATCH AREA...WITH ISOLATED 10 INCH AMOUNTS IN THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS OF THE ADIRONDACKS.

Nice, I figured something along those lines based on your posts ( well, not the business/econ thing ).

I left my house is Placid at 7:30 and it had changed to snow. It has been snowing ever since. I am expecting if it contiunues to precipitate that we will get a foot before sun down.

The cams look promising! Looks like it just recently started sticking at the base

A bit of an inversion on the mountain today?

The 3:00 web cams in Placid all show lots of white, while the web came at the base of the mountain is anything but. Looks like it changed to rain at the base, hopefully it's snowing up top.

Not an inversion, the cold advection is just starting to occur, I would estimate the freezing level has been around 2000 feet all day. Once the low passes, freezing level s will drop. However, I believe the sumit has been getting good snow all day and I think my 8 inch call will come close. The base will recieve around 2 inches as the storms backlash moves in.

I'm curious....is the base of the mountain at a lower elevation than Lake Placid?

Yup.

As I've been told Main Street in Placid is basically the same elevation as the mid station lodge.

Ride you bike back from whiteface and you wont think it so odd. Its all uphill.

Smokey the Bear on the gondola line and midstation lodge are both at about 2000' as per the GPS. If you look at the ORDA web cams Mount VanHo has the same coverage as mid station because that's at 2100'. The base lodge is lower that town but not by much.

Hi TJ,

I've made that trip and you are right. Going through The Notch is a bit scary when there is traffic. The road is very narrow there. “Bicyclers” know what I mean. Four and more wheelers please be courteous and slow down for those out the on two wheels.

It’s almost time to switch from two wheels on the roads to wheels on the trainer and, “two boards” on The Mountain above The Notch.

Gave up on Biking back in September. I think I have done one ride. I just dont pay attention to the traffic behind me. It it hit me I wont rmemebr it anyways.

Been running since the 13th of sept. How do I remember that date. ITs the date I gave up smoking, cigarettes that is.

It's also the day I was married on many years ago and it was on a Friday. It only lasted 23 years though so there maybe something to Friday the 13th.

I haven't biked much this year either. Used to do 1000/mpy but no more. I used to run also but wore out the cartilage in my knees and my Orthopedic Doc. says no more running. He is a skier and okayed that but recommended staying out of the bumps. I try but they can't always be avoided.

Congratulations on quitting smoking. I quit for about 12 years, went back and quit gain for the past 15. I have no urge to smoke any more at all. It will happen. It's easier to give up drinking than smoking but let’s not get carried away here.
