No more GORDA?

Now, I know that they probably weren't thinking big, but it sure would be interesting to see what a private company could do with Gore. It does not take rocket science to know that Gore could be much more of a mountain if it were not for the ORDA handcuffs.

Would be interesting to see what private enterprise would do....But, I think ORDA has been doing a pretty great job the past few years. Gore just keeps getting better and better.

First of all, it's worth noting that the article doesn't mention Gore and Whiteface. Second of all, what makes you think that Private management would have any more inclination to open more trails on weekdays than ORDA?!!?

Ask Pico skiers how well the POWDR takeover of Killington is going . . .

Can Gore even be sold to or leased by a private developer? My understanding is that the state constitution prevents it from being so. Thank God.

I wasn't trying to jump down your throat, I'm just not a fan of privitization at all, and I think it almost always makes situations worse, rather than better.

Selling Gore would definitely take a constitutional referendum. There might be some way to lease without a referendum. It would be interesting to see what a private company could do. Back when commercial loans were more abundant a private operator could have taken a loan and completed the equivalent of five years of ORDA improvements in one season...just because they'd have the $$ available. ORDA had to downgrade the ski bowl lift just to get enough $$ to finish Burnt Ridge and other projects.

I'm not sure how Pico fits into your anti-privatization argument. Pico was privately run before being taken over by Killington.

I'm aware . . . My point is that new management doesn't always lead to good changes. And some (all?) private companies are more concerned about bottom line than about the skiing experience.

When POWDR took over Pico, they cut out skiing on some days altogether, except on certain Holidays. If a company like POWDR took over Gore, I wouldn't automatically assume they'd open more lifts . . .

Orvlle Slutzky (Hunter Mountain) unsuccessfully sued the State when DEC transferred the authority to operate Gore to ORDA, claiming that it was a prohibited lease. The courts said that it wasn't a lease.
