I've been trying to decide when to start this thread. I figured - what the heck. It's the first mention of the "S" word by the NWS for North Creek, so I thought I'd throw it out there. Stoke on:

Sunday Night: A chance of rain showers before midnight, then a chance of rain and snow showers between midnight and 2am, then a chance of snow showers after 2am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 30. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

MidnightCarving

the s word may be optimistic, but i would say you've timed the thread appropriately, because if anyone is like me, they're starting to get anxious for the season, this is just one way to relieve the stress till we can truly relieve stress on the mountain. Anyway, im gonna put in an early prediction for a nov. 22nd opening.

OK Matt you convinced me to post this.

From the National Weather Service, for Gore Mountain:

Overnight: Snow showers, mainly before midnight. Low around 31. North wind around 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total nighttime snow accumulation of around an inch possible.

Wednesday: A chance of snow showers, mixing with rain after 1pm. Cloudy, with a high near 34. North wind between 8 and 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

And a map from Accuweather:

Seems like a longshot for Gore, maybe more of a Killington event.

Early season wet snow can snap trees and powerlines and create all kinds of havoc.

Text is from NWS for Albany Zone. Graphic From Accuweather:

...IT APPEARS THE SIGNIFICANT CYCLOGENESIS WILL DEVELOP ALONG...OR JUST OFF THE EASTERN SEABOARD. THE BIG QUESTION IS EXACTLY WHERE THIS STORM MOVES. SOME MODELS INDICATE THIS STORM WOULD TRACK ALONG THE EASTERN SEABOARD AND ACTUALLY HAVE ENOUGH COLD AIR TO SUPPORT SNOW. THE LATEST DATA TENDS TO CONFINE THIS CYCLOGENESIS FURTHER TO OUR NORTHEAST...ACROSS THE GULF OF MAINE...WHICH WILL KEEP THE HEAVIEST QPF OUT OF OUR REGION. THAT IS NOT TO SAY WE WOULD ESCAPE ACCUMULATING SNOW. SOME ACCUMULATING SNOW IS A GOOD BET ACROSS OUR HIGHER TERRAIN...ESPECIALLY TO THE NORTHEAST OF ALBANY. EVEN VALLEY LOCATIONS COULD RECEIVE THEIR FIRST COATING OF SNOW COME MONDAY NIGHT BUT IT WAY TOO EARLY TO DETERMINE EXACTLY HOW MUCH...OR EXACTLY WHEN THIS SNOW MIGHT OCCUR. STAY TUNED.

Issued by The National Weather Service
Albany, NY
3:38 pm EDT, Mon., Oct. 27, 2008

... WINTER STORM WATCH IN EFFECT FROM TUESDAY MORNING THROUGH WEDNESDAY MORNING...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN ALBANY HAS ISSUED A WINTER STORM WATCH... WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM TUESDAY MORNING THROUGH WEDNESDAY MORNING FOR THE WESTERN AND SOUTHERN ADIRONDACKS... THE MOHAWK AND SCHOHARIE VALLEYS... AND THE EASTERN CATSKILLS.

A RAPIDLY DEEPENING AREA OF LOW PRESSURE OFF THE MIDDLE ATLANTIC COAST WILL TRACK NORTHWARD ON TUESDAY ACROSS THE CONNECTICUT RIVER VALLEY. RAIN WILL MIX WITH AND CHANGE TO ALL SNOW TUESDAY MORNING AND BECOME HEAVY AT TIMES THROUGH THE DAY. SNOWFALL RATES COULD APPROACH 1 INCH PER HOUR ACROSS THE HIGHER ELEVATIONS OF THE CATSKILLS AND ADIRONDACKS TUESDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING. TOTAL SNOWFALL BY WEDNESDAY MORNING WILL RANGE BETWEEN 8 AND 16 INCHES... WITH LOCALLY HIGHER AMOUNTS POSSIBLE.

WINDS ASSOCIATED WITH THIS STORM WILL INCREASE FROM THE WEST ON TUESDAY WITH SPEEDS OF 20 TO 30 MPH WITH OCCASIONAL GUSTS BETWEEN 50 AND 55 MPH. THESE WINDS... ALONG WITH THE SNOW... WILL RESULT IN POOR VISIBILITIES. IN ADDITION... THE COMBINATION OF HEAVY SNOW AND STRONG WINDS MAY RESULT IN DOWNED TREES AND POWER LINES.

A WINTER STORM WATCH MEANS THERE IS A POTENTIAL FOR SIGNIFICANT SNOWFALL THAT MAY IMPACT TRAVEL.

Thanks for posting that. I wish my internet connection was better so it wouldn't take me so long to search all the weather/mtn sites.

Windham is reporting 4-12 already. I think i may head down there in the morning rather than Gore. Only time will tell

10-28-2008, 08:33 PM
OVERNIGHT...SNOWFALL RATES WILL DIMINISH TO UNDER HALF AN INCH PER
HOUR. HOWEVER A NORTHWEST WIND WILL CONTINUE AT 20 TO 30
MPH...GUSTING OVER 50 ACROSS THIS AREA. THE COMBINATION OF THE
HEAVY WET SNOW...WIND AND RESIDUAL LEAVES ON TREES...WILL LIKELY
RESULT IN WIDESPREAD AND LONG LASTING POWER OUTAGES...ESPECIALLY
IN AREAS OVER 2000 FEET WHERE OVER FOOT TO 20 INCHES OF SNOW WILL
FALL. LESSER AMOUNTS OF 6 TO 12 INCHES WILL FALL BETWEEN
ELEVATIONS OF 1000 AND 2000 FEET...BUT WILL NEVERTHELESS CAUSE
SOME POWER OUTAGES. LOWER ELEVATIONS RIGHT ALONG THE MOHAWK RIVER
MIGHT RECEIVE LESS THAN 6 INCHES OF SNOW...BUT STILL ENOUGH TO
PRODUCE SOME SPOTTY POWER OUTAGES.

While I've been excited about this major first snowfall of the season, in the back of my mind I've been thinking about the very real possibility of damage from heavy snow and high winds.

This call from NWS for North River doesn't make me feel any better:

Tonight: Snow likely. Cloudy, with a low around 31. Breezy, with a west wind between 18 and 20 mph, with gusts as high as 55 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. Total nighttime snow accumulation of 4 to 8 inches possible.

National Grid...the power company in the area has a page on their site...that reports outages by county and it seems to be kept reasonably current. As of this posting - around 10pm Tues 10/28...most of the outages seem to be in central NY. Nothing reported yet for Warren County.

https://www1.nationalgridus.com/niagaramohawk/storm/OutagesByCounty.aspx

The last thing I want to do is relive this episode, this past March:

OK back to the WEATHER thread.

I've been hearing comments about a "pattern change" but not able to find anybody who would go on record. Not NWS or weather.com.

Finally my buddy - the eternal snow optimist - Henry M at Accuweather comes out with this:

The long range is looking quite interesting. I will tell you, I am watching the storm from the 18th to the 21st. Both the GFS and EURO swing a storm across the northern tier of the country with plenty of cold air for what could be a significant snow event from the northern Rockies to the Northeast. While the details are unclear, I think one has to just look at the pattern of warm air building across the South and very cold air coming in from the north. The two could yield a significant storm.

In the meantime, lake-effect snow will get underway this weekend and folks downwind of the lakes could have the first major lake-effect snow outbreak. I am talking 1-2 feet of snow, especially northern Michigan and western New York.

(The only maps he had were of a potential snow/ice storm in the upper midwest.)

im in school in oswego, out here we've had touches of lake effect snow last few days, nothing more than a few squalls, but its got me itching real bad for the season to start.

At a minimum, let's hope for snowmaking temps leading up to opening day:

"The long-range forecast team at AccuWeather.com feels that the pattern that is establishing itself across the country this week and next will stay in place during Thanksgiving week."

From NWS in Albany:

FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY...

...HIGH (pressure) WILL SLIDE OFF TO OUR SOUTH AND EAST SUN NIGHT...AS A WARM FRONT APPROACHES FROM THE WEST. THIS FRONT WILL ... BRING THE CHANCE OF WIDESPREAD SNOW ... POSSIBLY MIXED WITH SOME RAIN IN THE VALLEYS ON MON. THIS MAY BRING THE FIRST ACCUMULATING SNOW TO MANY LOWER ELEVATION LOCATIONS.

MON NIGHT INTO TUE...MODELS HAVE COME INTO SOMEWHAT BETTER AGREEMENT ...THE GFS MAINTAINS A NORTHERLY TRACK WITH THE LOW REMAINING NORTH OF THE CANADIAN BORDER. HOWEVER...THE ECMWF DIGS THE UPPER LOW ACROSS THE OHIO VALLEY AND MID ATLANTIC REGION...SPAWNING A RATHER POTENT COASTAL LOW ON TUE WITH SIGNIFICANT WINTRY PRECIP FOR EASTERN NEW YORK AND WESTERN NEW ENGLAND...WITH A HIGH AMOUNT OF UNCERTAINTY FOR THE EARLY TO MIDDLE PART OF NEXT WEEK.

I'm going to watch it:

* * * *

Sunday: Partly sunny, with a high near 30.

Sunday Night: A chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 17. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Monday: A chance of snow. Cloudy, with a high near 34. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Monday Night: A chance of snow. Cloudy, with a low around 23. Chance of precipitation is 50%.

Tuesday: A chance of snow showers. Cloudy, with a high near 34. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Tuesday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 21.

OK YEA the WEATHER thread. Remember the weather?

The NWS is now at a 60% chance of snow for Monday/Tues...that's a high percentage that far out.

From the KALB porn stash:

THE EXTENDED PERIOD BEGINS WITH LOW PRESSURE MOVING INTO WESTERN NEW YORK FROM THE GREAT LAKES.

THE GFS INDICATES EXPLOSIVE DEVELOPMENT OF THE LOW WHICH BECOMES A TRANSLATION TO A DEVELOPING COASTAL SYSTEM...WHICH THEN CUTS OFF AND MEANDERS AROUND SOUTHERN NEW YORK/NEW ENGLAND THROUGH WEDNESDAY.

THE GFS ALSO DRAWS IN MUCH WARMER AIR UP THROUGH 850 MB...LEAVING ONLY THE CATSKILLS TO THE
ADIRONDACKS IN GOOD SHAPE FOR SIGNIFICANT SNOWFALL AS IT APPEARS RIGHT NOW. THE ECMWF HANGS BACK FOR LONGER BEFORE THE ENERGY IS DRAWN INTO THE COASTAL SYSTEM MUCH LATER IN THE GAME...THU/FRI.

HAVE GONE SOMEWHERE IN BETWEEN THE GFS AND ECMWF SOLUTIONS BECAUSE THE GREATER PERSISTENCE OF THE GFS LOW COMPARED TO THE 12Z THU RUN...AND THE MUCH FURTHER WEST CUTTING OFF OF THE ECMWF LOW SINCE ITS 12Z RUN...BOTH POINT TO LOW CONFIDENCE AND CONTINUED UNCERTAINTY
CONCERNING THE OUTCOME OF THIS EVENT GIVEN EITHER MODEL.

11-22-2008, 01:53 AM
Tuesday Wednesday looks real good.

This model seems to be the idea.

I know this is not all stoke. I think I'm cranky because what's his name posted his TR in my weather thread.

From the NWS in Albany:

THIS WILL BE ANOTHER ELEVATION STORM WITH THE HIGHER TERRAIN WEST OF THE HUDSON VALLEY EXPERIENCING MOSTLY SNOW TONIGHT... THERE IS ALSO CONCERN FOR FREEZING RAIN ESPECIALLY IN THE LAKE GEORGE SARATOGA REGION... HEAVIEST SNOW ACCUMULATIONS TONIGHT EXPECTED IN THE WESTERN ADIRONDACKS AS WELL AS THE HIGHER TERRAIN OF THE EASTERN CATSKILLS WHERE 3 TO 8
INCHES OF SNOW IS POSSIBLE.

* * * *

THE BIG QUESTION FOR TUESDAY WILL BE THE EXACT TRACK OF THE SURFACE LOW AND HOW QUICKLY IF AT ALL THE COLD LAYER IN PLACE ACROSS THE WESTERN ADIRONDACKS IS ERODED.

ANOTHER CONCERN WILL BE STRONG EAST-SOUTHEAST WINDS ON TUESDAY.

HIGHS ARE EXPECTED TO BE IN THE MID 30S TO MID 40S AND IF THE WESTERN ADIRONDACKS CAN MAINTAIN THE COLD AIR IN THE LOWER LEVELS LONG ENOUGH ON TUESDAY ANOTHER 3 TO 8 INCHES OF SNOW IS POSSIBLE.

IN ADDITION THE WINDS COUPLED WITH THE HEAVY WET SNOW HAVE THE POTENTIAL TO CAUSE WIDESPREAD POWER OUTAGES. LATEST ECMWF INDICATES A BRIEF PUSH OF WARM AIR INTO THE WESTERN ADIRONDACKS IN THE MORNING THEN WRAPS COLD AIR AROUND SOUTH SIDE OF LOW CHANGING ANY MIXED PCPN BACK TO SNOW DURING THE AFTERNOON.

Harvey44

This is much more positive than everything else I've been reading. I'll take it if it verifies:

Megatron....will look for your accum updates at the end of the storm. :D

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN ALBANY HAS ISSUED A WINTER STORM
WARNING FOR HEAVY SNOW...UNTIL MIDNIGHT EST TUESDAY NIGHT.

SNOWFALL AMOUNTS OF 8 TO 16 INCHES IN THE SOUTHERN ADIRONDACKS ARE PROJECTED
BY THE TIME THE PRECIPITATION TAPERS OFF LATE TUESDAY NIGHT WITH
THE HIGHEST SNOWFALL TOTALS EXPECTED TO OCCUR AT ELEVATIONS ABOVE
2000 FEET.

A COMPLEX STORM SYSTEM WILL IMPACT THE REGION TONIGHT THROUGH
TUESDAY NIGHT. LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM WILL APPROACH FROM THE GREAT
LAKES REGION TONIGHT AND THEN DRIFT SLOWLY EAST ACROSS OUR REGION
ON TUESDAY. THIS STORM WILL PRODUCE MAINLY SNOW STARTING THIS
EVENING AND CONTINUING THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT. MUCH OF THE
PRECIPITATION IS EXPECTED TO FALL MAINLY AS SNOW.

IN ADDITION...EAST TO SOUTHEAST WINDS OF 15 TO 25 MPH WITH GUSTS
UP TO 40 MPH ARE POSSIBLE LATE TONIGHT AND TUESDAY...WHICH
COMBINED WITH THE HEAVY SNOW MAY RESULT IN POWER OUTAGES.

A WINTER STORM WARNING MEANS SIGNIFICANT AMOUNTS OF SNOW...
SLEET...AND ICE ARE EXPECTED OR OCCURRING. STRONG WINDS ARE ALSO
POSSIBLE. THIS WILL MAKE TRAVEL VERY HAZARDOUS OR IMPOSSIBLE.

But we are getting the storm, calling for some pretty big-deal icing, im thinking i'll get out early, unless the townies come into the bar all night. Maybe i'll sleep at my moms place instead of driving home 40min. nab a few hours of sleep and hit Hickory, then come back for work on Friday.

It's just been a real crazy week. Piles of procrastinated homework/projects/tests. Gotta stay social on top of that (21st b-day yesterday). Have to sell my truck by Monday. Study for 2 finals on Tuesday morning, then hit the road into the sunset 8) And work of course. And I still have to move all my crap into moms basement.

This is an excerpt from the best (most optimistic) thing I've found. From Henry M:

Can Santa Bring Me a Big Daddy

NAO TANKS... CAN THAT MEAN SOMETHING IS BREWING...

...This morning I looked at the long range, and it it seems some blocking might start to show up by next weekend. The GFS NAO chart... shows the NAO tanking by this weekend. I have been watching the storm around the third which has my interest for what could be our first chance at a Big Daddy storm.

The GFS has been taking the storm back and forth between the eastern Great Lakes and the coast. The recent runs of the GFS have suggested the storm ends up along the coast. The EURO shows one center going up into the eastern lakes and a secondary developing off the coast of Virginia. I am sure that the next run of the EURO will show an even stronger storm along the coast...

Looks like we've got 5 days of tough luck. Not to say there won't be opportunities for some good turns when the temp is up and the sun is out. From here in downtown NJ....not too likely I can take advantage...but you guys can...

From the Mad River Glen Guys weather blog:

("UGLY, UGLY, UGLY...yaddi yaddi yadda...")

Then....

Improvements will be gradual going into New Years and then beyond but at least one of our important teleconnection indicators will make a shift. The North Atlantic Oscillation index which is one of the three indices to be on the more unfavorable side of zero will move into the more favorable category around New Years Day.

From here the pattern will find it difficult to simply continue in its trough west/ridge east mentality and we should see our threat of big surges of warmth and nair diminish. The need for some additional new natural snow will be vital at this time and it seems as if the potential is there for a storm between the 3rd and 6th of the month. Get the pattern right and the rest takes care of itself. It appears we take some steps to do this but not until after new year.

Harvey44

From the Mad River Weather guy:

Pattern aligning itself in a very "right" way

One has to be seriously encouraged with the outlook for the first half of January. The NAO shift is the first triggering mechanism but this will be combined later in the month with what now appears to be a complete elimination of the trough across the west.

Now it appears as if the NAO shift will be combined with the building of a ridge across the west and this severely weakens the threat for rain for at least the first 15 days of January. If we shut down the Pacific entirely, including the all important moisture supply of the jet stream's southern branch than it could be more of a dry cold but this is jumping a bit ahead of ourselves.

The first 10 days of January will feature at least 2 significant storms and I am encouraged that we will recover a healthy percentage of what was recently lost.

WILL MAINTAIN CURRENT WINTER STORM WARNINGS...HOWEVER THERE WILL BE SOME CHANGES DUE TO CURRENT TRENDS. WILL MENTION MORE FREEZING RAIN AND ICE ACCRETION...WITH LOWER SNOW TOTALS.

THE ONLY EXCEPTION WILL BE ACROSS THE SOUTHERN ADIRONDACKS WHERE PREDOMINANTLY SNOW WILL FALL WITH SOME SLEET MIXED IN.

THERE WILL LIKELY BE A SOMEWHAT SHARP GRADIENT TO WHERE HEAVY SNOW FALL VERSUS ICING...WITH A STRIPE OF 3 TO 6 INCHES TOTAL SNOW/SLEET NORTH OF THE CAPITAL REGION...WITH 5 TO 10 IN THE SOUTHERN ADIRONDACKS.
