We live in the Northeast so we have to be use to it at times in winter, it's still tuff to take though. The good news is the snow will be soft for the next few days.

Thanx for the stoke Harv. I plan on being up at Gore from the first(Jan.) to the fifth. I have had some great days up there in the past, but if you don't mind sharing some of your knowledge it would be greatly appreciated. :D

I'm sick...
Now I'm locked into a $2K hotel room (not to mention airfare) for next week. I look at the webcams and the radar, and all I see is rain and temps tomorrow forecast to be in the fifties, twenty-five degrees above normal.
We absolutely love it there, but three out of the past four years have been lousy conditions this time. I wish now I'd have gone with my gut and canceled to go to Winter Park...

Is it even worth coming up there Monday? Will there be any snow left- or just frozen ice?

Yeah, the weather is a bummer, but LP is still a really fun place, even in the rain. :-)

Twin...you're welcome. But there are at least 1000 people who know the scoop on Gore better than I do. I've skied some of that stuff, but ADD boy would have a hard time naming it or finding it again. (LOVE the idea of LawnGuyLand.)

Here's the GFS hinting at possibilities for end of the week:

Your angst is certainly understandable, but based on your prior posts, if I'm not mistaken, you've indicated that your family is/are all beginner skiers. That said, I think you'll be OK. Monday will definitely be the worst of it, but if you're actually coming up on Monday, I assume that you weren't planning to ski that day anyway.

There's no doubt ... the mountain's getting hit pretty hard by this bad weather. From your perspective, I think you can expect reasonable conditions next week on the Kids Kampus trails, and those serviced by the Bear Lift. It would seem pretty likely that Whiteface management (and hopefully they're listening) is going to make every effort to get every snow gun in the arsenal out as soon as temps allow on Monday, so that the remainder of the holiday week can be salvaged.

I wouldn't give up hope yet ... current forecasts are calling for highs in the low to mid 20's from Tuesday through the weekend. That's definitely GREAT news for you, as they should be able to rebuild pretty quickly. If the high temps were forecast for the mid 30's, I'd be worried!!!

That all said, conditions today were pretty nice!!! Nice soft snow that you could really have some fun with ... if you didn't mind being soaked from head to toe!!! Unfortunately, though, the trails with only natural snow, Wilderness, Lower McKenzie and a couple of others are going to suffer badly. Most of the other trails seemed to be holding up fairly well, but we still have to get through tonight and tomorrow.

You're spot on, the snow was really good.

Thanks for the reply. And to think that just a week ago I thought we were a lock for great conditions given all the snow you've had the last couple of weeks...
Kids Kampus- bite your tongue! :P Hate dodging all those little ankle biters! We honed our beginner skills on Wolf/Wolf Run last year, and wanted to "move up" the Facelift to Easy Street/Boreen this year...

I was just reading that Chicago has had over two inches of rain- with flooding everywhere from their record snowfall. I agree, I was looking at the forecast highs for the week and it's supposed to be below freezing the entire time. If not, I'd bag it...

We were going to ski Tuesday, but maybe we'd be better off making that our "day off" and starting Wed instead to give them another day to get it in better shape. We bought tickets for the Ski Jumping on Monday night- guess that's up in the air now, as well. This sucks...

Thats cool man, they pinned the old "hyper-active" label on me in grade school as well. I rarely remember trail names myself.
Some general direction around the "new" area/lift would be helpful. Sounds like there are some flats to avoid over there.

By the way the only people I've ever heard say "LonGuyLend" don't live here. And people don't live in an island, we live ON an island. It really burns me when people say "oh I'm in long island". No, not unless your an ostrich(they bury there heads in sand)

P.S. sorry about the thread hijack

Would be a wealth of knowledge I'm sure. I wonder how their new terrain is fairing

The following is from Herb Stevens' latest report ...

Summary
All of the East and the Great Lakes regions have endured a damaging intrusion of warmth the past couple of days but better days are straight ahead. Once the cold gets into place later this week, it will dominate for 2 to 3 weeks, during which time the pattern will favor Alberta Clippers and coastal storms...starting with the first weekend in January.

The cold will eventually penetrate into the central and southern Appalachians, where the best part of this season will likely occur during mid January. The West has been snowy for a couple of weeks now, but the wave train from the Pacific will slow down while the focus of the cold and snow shifts east, only to resume later in the month. Happy New Year!

The Mad River Guy agrees:

Pattern aligning itself in a very "right" way

One has to be seriously encouraged with the outlook for the first half of January. The NAO shift is the first triggering mechanism but this will be combined later in the month with what now appears to be a complete elimination of the trough across the west.

Now it appears as if the NAO shift will be combined with the building of a ridge across the west and this severely weakens the threat for rain for at least the first 15 days of January. If we shut down the Pacific entirely, including the all important moisture supply of the jet stream's southern branch than it could be more of a dry cold but this is jumping a bit ahead of ourselves.

The first 10 days of January will feature at least 2 significant storms and I am encouraged that we will recover a healthy percentage of what was recently lost.

KALB has gone to a winter storm watch for Weds. BTV can't be too far behind.

The weekend has potential too...This should be a good week.
