ORDA chairlift back in operation

WILMINGTON -- The Olympic Regional Development Authority's Summit Quad chairlift, which derailed Saturday afternoon at Whiteface Ski Center, was back in operation as of 2:15 p.m. Tuesday.

The incident happened when a wind gust caused a descending chair and a communication cable to become entangled. That caused the chairlift cable to jump off one of the rollers at the adjacent lift tower, which automatically shut the lift down.

About 80 Whiteface personnel were involved in evacuation of 47 skiers without injury. They riders were lowered from the chairs by rope and harness within two hours of the derailment. That included transport to the base lodge of those lowered after dark and additional care once they were safely in the lodge.
