Okay, I'm hoping that I'm right when I abuse the cliche, "it could never happen here". But, since I'm not sure, and Elliot is definitely turning out to be Elliot, I'd love to hear back from the experts; is there any way that something like this could ever happen at the base of Whiteface?

That's a scary thought. I love Whiteface for it's absolute lack of such development.
