I don't know if this is on the same line of thought, but a friend of mine ( who has finally understood the value to pony up for a pass ) asked me why Whiteface doesn't have Gore's friend's pass program?
He really wanted to have the Whiteface point of purchase so his pass didn't say "More Gore" on it, but was willing to suffer that indignity in order to get the 10% off.
Somebody got an answer on this one?

Upcoming years?? Nice and vague..............

the book.... Exploring the Adirondak 46 high peaks by james r. burnside (avaliable from the ADK Club, Amazon, etc.) has info about the different early ski areas in the Wilmington area. if you like the ADK region, this book has alot of info. it's interesting read even if you're a non hiker.
since it's the off season, i'll relate an interesting story from that book. it should cause everyone to rethink their safety precautions and to carry a whistle in the back country..........
a guy was x-country skiing in the high peaks. as he approached the summit he entered into the cripple brush area( those very small flag trees) all this was buried in deep snow and he musta thought he was skiing on solid snow. he wasn't. suddenly the snow collasped under him and he fell into a 12-15 foot deep hole in the snow. he was unable to climb out. the short trees were of no use. he found himself stuck deep in the winter wilderness. he had a whistle with him that he kept blowing and blowing on for hours. luckily some one heard it and rescued him. if you get stuck, you will very quickly lose your voice(and get exhausted) yelling for help and you will no longer be able to summon help. anything can happen in the wilds. surely this man thought he was on solid snow when he skied over a "void" . it might have been his grave if he did not have that whistle. this is why the ADK sells whistles - they're life savers.
here's a riddle for you..........what can a man drown in and not get wet?
several years ago i was hiking with some ADKers. as is their wont, they started talking about hiking various mtns when the talk turned to mt. marshall. one guy said he slipped into a trailside "mudhole?" and he just kept sinking. he was up to his chest before he was able to grab some tree roots and pull himself out. another person said the same thing happened to them there. both said it was really weird. both feared they would die. so i asked them " were you wet when you got out? ". " no i was dry" they replied. " Quicksand." i told them. "you were in quicksand ". they were shocked.
i've never seen Quicksand mentioned in all the outdoor stuff i've read on the area. even the Park publications don't mention it. appearantly it's there, at least on marshall.
be prepared. get a whistle. your cell phone will probably be useless.
just a little FYI.
incoming .................DUCK !
suggestion for whiteface's Web site:
add a page like the one on gore's site (http://www.goremountain.com/mountain/improvements.cfm) that lists upcoming improvements....say it loud, say it proud! (unless, of course, not much is on tap? )
regarding the picture of the two chairs and the lake currently cycling on the web site, how about getting a pic with real adirondack chairs?
I think, if you check the history of the Adk. chair, that is the original design. I read that somewhere, but can't recall where. Off shoots from that design are plentiful, including probably, the style you are thinking of. I may have read it on a tag on one of the chairs that were by guest services last season.Originally Posted by ComeBackMudPuddles
I think those are Westport Chairs, which were before ADK chairs. Solid back and solid seat.
